Keywords and PLR
One of the most common types of PLR (private label rights) that you will find is article packs. These can be a great way to get a variety of content for new or existing web sites. You have probably seen the various monthly memberships where you get a variety of articles on different topics, You need to do the keyword research first though.
One I use is Expert Content Monthly. I get 12 topics with 25 articles on each topic. This makes great content for niche blogs but…
Not all of the topics are equally valuable.
Now when I decide to do a topic there are some expenses in both time and money so it is not likely that I will do all twelve. After all I need to get an appropriate domain, install a new blog (although that has gotten easier with Expert WordPress), I need to redo the articles a bit to make them unique to me and then I need to start a linking strategy.
This can be a valuable start if you find which topics are most likely to be profitable and which topics with in that niche have sufficient traffic but not much competition. Looking at this month’s topics in the first 3 I checked I found one where the ad words cost per click was three times the others.
If advertisers are paying more you can make more on Adsense and the odds are really good that there are products available to promote as an affiliate. Now as long as there are keyword phrases that get sufficient traffic and are buying phrases this is worth the time and effort.
After all it will cost you $8 for a domain, hosting costs, either your time or money to get the articles targeted properly and start a linking strategy. You need to have a reasonable expectation of making a profit to spend the time or money. Picking the right topic is the key but it takes a bit of keyword research.
These types of packages tend to be generic but if you have created a good keyword list you can adapt the articles for the specific keywords that you have found that are golden. (You know the ones with good traffic, low competition and costly ad words clicks.)
For example I just created a site on Colon Cleansing. In doing the research I was able to find 12 different phrases that could be targeted from the articles that have very little competition, competitive pricing on ad words and good traffic volume.
I can use these terms to make the articles unique to me and have keyword phrases that are easy to rank for at the same time.
Keyword research is the key to doing this. Steve Roye and I did a one hour call on exactly how to do this with free tools and you can grab the transcript, recording, checklists and workbook at Keyword Research Call.
If you are not doing the research and tweaking the content you end up wasting your time, effort and money.

Mike,
Good information on how to use PLR article packs that you would get from various sources.
I have heard some people ‘complain’ that the articles that they receive in these packs are not relevant to what they are targeting. I agree that sometimes it’s necessary to branch out and pursue another niche like you are with the colon cleansing.
Keep up the good work.
Thanks.

Good advice, as finding high paying keywords can really make back your initial expenses quite quickly, even with just a few visitors to the site. It’s neat to see some days where I don’t get a lot of traffic to a site, but I make a lot because of the keywords and the ads which are shown.

Not all of the topics are equally valuable. Key quote. Takeaway, you need to focus time and energy where they will have the greatest payoff. When you set up these sites up, it appears that adsense is your only way to monetize them. Is it really worth the effort?

I agree with focusing but there are many more ways to monetize them once they get going. On good sites adsense usually disappears but it is a good way to test things to start.
Mike, great outline again and good considerations for selecting the best niche based on keyword research on the topics you received. How much rewriting is still required for those articles in those newly issued article sets?

Really depends on how close to the targeted keywords they are. Usually does not take a lot. Just a few minutes an article.
A good piece on doing the right keyword research for you articles you want to use. And using the article packs can make it easier if you have a hard time coming up with what to write. There are a lot of different places that are offering article packs. Do you have specific guidelines that you use to pick a particular company? Thanks.

Great post Mike!
I agree that the keyword research is the crucial first step before you even go and buy a domain name.
I like the way you are using adsense to determine if the niche and the keywords you have selected are going to make it worth the effort to monetize the site with other options.
Adsense is a great way to test and using analytics you can determine which keywords are bringing you the most traffic and which ones are providing the most monetization.

Mike, I have the keyword call information that you and Steve did. Now I just need to get some of my PLR stuff written with good keywords and get it posted. Thanks for this informative post.

Mike. I’ve used the Expert Word Press blog install system and it does make it quicker to set up a blog, however your point about taking PLR articlea and tweaking them to include targeted keywors is important. I did pick up your Keyword Call and will refer to it again.
